I have enjoyed Eileen Merriman's books since she released her first Young Adult novel a few years ago. She is a most interesting author, as she has a parallel career as a haematologist in a hospital. It is guaranteed that her novels have some elements of medical jargon or information in them (but in an easy to understand way).
The Night She Fell is set in Dunedin amongst a group of university students. Two of the students, Alex (Xander) and Ashleigh have been a couple for 5 years, but are definitely not what you would call love's young dream. In fact, they have a rather strained, unhealthy relationship. Things between them come to an abrupt end when Ashleigh is discovered to have fallen (jumped? pushed?) from her third floor window.
She initially looks like an innocent victim of her circumstances, but as the story unfolds, more of her character is revealed and you start to realise the true extent of her nature. People can be shiny and beautiful on the outside, but looks can be deceptive.
This book is both an insight into a relationship that is very unhealthy, verging on abusive and an investigation into what actually happened on that fateful night.
This is an easy to read page-turner brought to you by an author who is not afraid to push boundaries and ask the hard questions.
