The Wartime Book Club by Kate Thompson

The story is set around the wartime occupation of Jersey in the Channel Islands half way between England and France.

The story shows the hardships and sacrifices the people of Jersey had to endure under the German occupation.

The bravery of a people under pressure to fight for their existence.

The main characters are Grace, the librarian and her friend, Bea Rose, the postwoman. They form a book club with permission of the German's, giving the islanders an escapism through reading.

As the occupation carries on, things become quite dangerous and our heroines pay the price for their resistance.

The story is very similar to The Guernsey Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Burrows. It was another Channel Island story, but with a similar theme. Both books are excellent reading.
