Where the crawdads sing by Delia Owens

This is a book that people either love or hate – not many people sit on the fence when it comes to having an opinion about this book. Throw into the mix the currently popularity of this book -it’s now a movie, a Book Tok sensation as well as being on the Reece Witherspoon Book Club list. Throw all these ingredients together and you have a situation of people desperately wanting to get their hands on this book and either being disappointed or elated.

As the title suggests Where The Crawdads Sing is set in the isolated marshland near the coast of North Carolina. Kya is a young girl who has been abandoned by her family and shunned by the local community. She must make her own way in the world and learn to be self-sufficient while evading local authorities who want her to go to school. The marsh and its myriad of wildlife become Kya’s classroom and her only friends. That is until one day she spies a young boy fishing while she is out exploring. This friendship will go on to have a big impact on her life and those around her.

I must admit I am firmly in the ‘enjoyed this book’ camp. I don’t think the book is perfect by any means (what book is) but I liked that it made me feel sad and hopeful almost simultaneously. I also admired Kya’s strength, independence, and courage. How can you not have admiration and respect for a character who was abandoned but has worked hard to find her place in the world?

I find myself drawn to books that get caught up in hype of varying degrees, but I also realise that at the end of the day each reader must make up their own mind. I urge you to read this book and come to your own conclusions.

Happy Reading!
