Where the Crickets Sing by Rosie Boom

The Barn Chronicles are a series of books about the Boom family as they pursue their dream of leaving city life behind and creating a new, more self sufficient life in the country side close to Rosie’s parents and twin sister. The family of eight live in a large barn on the property while Rosie’s husband Chris and family helpers ( some always willing, some not so much!) construct a new house, in part built with timber milled from fallen logs on the property. Rosie tells the story from Millie’s point of view, and Millie also happens to be in charge of caring for the family’s flock of ducks and chickens, the milking cow and her calves, and the vegetable garden. Somehow she also manages to enjoy riding her pony and keep up with her home schooling! The family have many adventures and misadventures, and the books are easy to read and sprinkled with lovely pencil drawings by the multi talented Rosie. I imagine children would love reading these books, or being read to, and I enjoyed them very much as an adult also.
